In the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin we were painfully affected by the decision of the president of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the 10th of July to convert Hagia Sophia, a cathedral of great importance to Orthodox Churches and to the Christian World, from a museum into a mosque.

Contrary to the calls of different Christian organizations, heads of churches and political leaders, the Turkish government made a unilateral and a culpable decision, thus violating the rights of national religious minorities in Turkey. It is regrettable that the appeals and concerns of millions of Christians and the fact that Saint Sophia was included into the World Cultural Heritage sites by UNESCO were neglected by Turkey.

The actions of the Turkish government evoke heavy memories about the desecration and destruction of sanctuaries of the Armenian people as well as other Christian nations by the Ottoman authorities for ages. The Armenian Apostolic Holy Church and the Armenian nation, as a genocide survivor nation in Ottoman Turkey, share the pain and the concern of their Orthodox brothers and sisters. The Armenian Church condemns the decision of the Turkish government that is based on mere political interests and is harming greatly the process of mutual understanding and the dialogue between religions. At the same time we urge Turkey to reconsider its decision and to return to the principle of peaceful and prayerful coexistence of different religious communities in Turkey. During historical fluctuations and political alterations Hagia Sophia has acquired not only historical and cultural value but also a huge religious, cultural and political meaning and became not a symbol of clash of civilizations but that of cooperation and mankind unity.

We prayerfully support our beloved brother, His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, and our sisters and brothers in Orthodox Church in this difficult situation created by the unilateral decision of Turkey.

La S.Sede di Ejmiatsin ,Il 10 luglio scorso, ha preso nota con grande dispiacere, della decisione da parte del Presidente della Repubblica turca Recep Tayyip Erdogan, di trasformare in Moschea il Museo di Santa Sofia, celebre e importante luogo di culto per i Cristiani Ortodossi.
Nonostante i ripetuti richiami delle differenti Organizzazioni Ecumeniche Cristiane, dei diversi Capi religiosi e dei numerosi Capi di Stato, il Governo turco ha approvato in modo unilaterale e deprecabile questa decisione,calpestando così anche i diritti civili e religiosi di altre minoranze presenti in Turchia.
Constatiamo con dispiacere che gli appelli e le lamentele di milioni di Cristiani sono stati ignorati: senza contare il fatto che la Cattedrale di S.Sofia rientra nell’elenco dei Monumenti Patrimonio dell’Umanità dell ‘UNESCO.
Questa operazione del Governo turco risveglia antiche memorie riguardanti fatti che per lunghi secoli, durante l’impero ottomano, hanno turbato sia la popolazione Armena che altre minoranze Cristiane profanando e danneggiando molti luoghi sacri.
La Chiesa Apostolica Armena e il Popolo armeno ,in quanto sopravvissuti al Genocidio, desiderano condividere questo dolore e questa inquietudine con i fratelli ortodossi.
La Chiesa Apostolica Armena condanna questa pericolosa decisione del Governo turco che adottando una linea di condotta contraria al dialogo e all’Ecumenismo, agevola gli interessi politici ; nello stesso tempo fa appello ad una revisione, che faciliti un atteggiamento favorevole al ritorno ad una coesistenza pacifica e di professione della fede delle popolazioni della Turchia.
Nel corso di numerosi cambiamenti storici e politici S.Sofia , oltre a contribuire alla diffusione di valori religiosi e culturali, ha ottenuto diversi risultati (religiosi,culturali, politici ) che sono divenuti fonti di civilizzazione ma anche simboli di unione e di collaborazione tra i Popoli.
A causa di questa decisone unilaterale ed alla conseguente situazione critica, ci uniamo in preghiera con il Supremo Patriarca di Costantinopoli , il nostro Caro Fratello S.S. Bartolomeo I° e con le Sorelle ed i Fratelli Fedeli ortodossi .

Мы в  Первопрестольном Святом Эчмиадзине с болью отреагировали на решение президента Турции Реджеепа Тайиипа Эрдогана 10-ого Июля превратить собор Святой Софии, который имеет большое значение для Ортодоксальных церквей и для всего христианского мира, из музея в мечеть.

Вопреки призывам общехристианских организаций, глав церквей и политических лидеров, турецкое правительство приняло одностороннее и осуждаемое решение, нарушая этим права национальных и религиозных меньшинств в Турции. К сожалению, призывы и беспокойства миллионов христиан, а также тот факт, что собор Святой Софии был включён в состав Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО, не были приняты во внимание со стороны Турции.

Действия турецкого правительства вызывают в нас тяжёлые воспоминания о том, что в течение многих веков святыни армянского, а также других христианских народов уничтожались и подвергались осквернению. Армянская Апостольская Святая Церковь и армянский народ, как народ, который пережил геноцид в Османской Турции, делит боль и беспокойство своих братьев и сестёр из Ортодоксальной Церкви. Армянская церковь осуждает решение турецкого правительства, которое преследует исключительно политическую выгоду и вредит процессу взаимопонимания и диалога религий. Мы призываем пересмотреть это решение и вернуться к принципу мирного молитвенного сосуществования разных религиозных общин в Турции.

Во времена исторических колебаний и политических перемен Собор Святой Софии, кроме исторической и культурной ценности, приобрела также очень важное религиозное, культурное и политическое значение и стала символом не столкновения цивилизаций, а символом сотрудничества и единства человечества.

В этой трудной ситуации, сложившейся из-за такого одностороннего решения, мы нашими молитвами поддерживаем Вселенского патриарха Константинопольского, нашего возлюбленного брата Святейшего патриарха Варфоломея и наших сестёр и братьев Ортодоксальной церкви.
